Eatin' good in the neighborhood....it's getting old.

Day 27
St. Joseph MO to Chillicothe MO
86 Miles, 5,000ft gain, 93* with 90% humidity.

Every night a different hotel and a different bed but every morning you can count on the new hotel having the same waffle maker, the same biscuits & gravy and the same fake eggs. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the breakfast and I need the fuel but a solid month of the same crap can grow old. Every few days we have a hotel that has a pancake machine that all you do is push a button and in 60 seconds a couple pancakes come rolling out the back end, the pancakes aren't that great but it is fun to watch the magic pancake machine work.
Tonight we had dinner at Applebees, there is a limit to how many times you can be "feelin' good in the neighborhood". I have the Applebees menu memorized and as a group we have the "2 fer $20" specials down to a science. The food is actually very good and there is something for everyone but I really could use a home cooked meal.

Today's ride started out along some valley farm lands and wet lands area which brought with it some huge "nat clouds". Fortunately I saw the clouds coming and closed my mouth but some riders got a little extra protein early in the ride.
I normally wouldn't post a picture of a pet goat that was frolicking in a yard but since all the wildlife that we have seen in the last week has been very flat and very dead.
This was a great sign and further down the road there was a small spread that was titled "Allmosta Farm"
Nice place but it raises the question, what's its function?             Yes, we did start singing the Conjunction Junction song followed by Petticoat Junction.

This roadside monument was to a local politician.
"Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true"
This is how much of today looked...BIG ROLLERS. We had 85 miles and 5,000 feet of gain, with the heat and humidity it made the later part of the day a bit uncomfortable. After today's ride we had an accident. George had some after ride adjustments done to his bike and decided to ride over to the store to get some batteries and check the repair. While in the parking lot George hit a hole and went over the front bars. One of the staff happened to be close by and saw that George was down and took him to the hospital and had him checked out. George is fine but he has some tender ribs, a chipped tooth, fat lip and a mix of cuts and bruises. Doctor says he will be off the bike for a day or two. George is a champ and I know that he will be riding as soon as possible.

Tomorrow is a day that I've been looking forward to. we have about the same amount of total climbing but we have 148 rollers (hills) like above to Kirksville MO. I have never ridden hills like this in this large of quantity, it will either be fun in a twisted way or I will be in a rotten mood when I write the blog tomorrow night.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.
Dream BIG, Jeff

  1. Missouri "rollers" - Ride as fast as you can in the highest gear you can push going down, as you start up the other side, shift down as quickly as you can to maintain your pace. If you do it right, and the roller isn't too high, your momentum will carry you to the top where you can start the process all over again. Wheeeeee!

  2. Waffles in 2 minutes and 30 seconds. I remember that well.
