Wooster, OH to Niles, OH
95 miles with late route change, climbing from the start and bad roads.
As much as yesterday was a great day on a bike today was just a day to get me closer to the finish line. It isn't that today was bad, it's just that it wasn't good either. We had many miles of bad road and we had a good deal of climbing but we didn't have the nice descents to pay off the climbs. The winds were not terrible but they sure as heck weren't favorable either. To sum the day up, it was a day on the bike that I won't remember.
There was a small town named Fulton Canal that looked like it might be fun to visit on a hot day and have a ice cream or sit on the patio of the coffee shop. But since we were on a mission to get today over with there was no stopping to smell the roses. Today is the 3rd day of 300 miles in 3 day stretch that can wear you down.
This may not look like a gourmet meal but these type of snacks during the day really help to keep you going. Bananas are always good, this was the first time for chips and salsa and the cheese but it was really quite good. The idea is to put in calories (fuel) and to not run the tank dry. I'm happy to report that after almost 3,000 miles of bike riding on this trip I have GAINED 2 pounds.
This is Harrys bike, he has a fish tank on the back and a dog on the front. Harry is from Liverpool England and did the cross country ride in 2009 and came back to do the last 1,000 miles again this year.
Harry is a great guy to hang around when it is time for the pub, anybody that rides a very serious bike across the country with a fish tank and a stuffed dog is someone that you should have a beer or 2 or 3 with.
Today was the first time that we rode on a rails to trails bike path since the ride began, this was a great 8 miles of no hills and no cars. We paid the price though, when we left the path we had heavy traffic and pissed off drivers the last 10 miles into town. So, remember a few nights ago when we went to Bob Evans to eat and we were flabergasted that they didn't serve beer? Tonight we went to Perkins. This resturant is just like Bob Evans except the food isn't as good and they do not have beer. This could have been a real issue except the beer gods were looking out for us. Back at the Holiday Inn Express it was 25 cent drink night, for a mere 25 cents our fine hostess would give us a pint of beer or a large glass of wine. This also included free ice cream and other goodies, For $1 I came to my room with a ice cream headace and a 4 beer buzz (friends don't let friends blog buzzed).
Since we will be in Pennsylvania tomorrow I thought it would be appropriate to drink Yuengling Beer from Pottsville, PA. So as you can see above I blogging happy as a clam about my 25 cent beer with my 25 cent beer.
Beer review:
Yuengling is Americas oldest brewery (178 years) and without a doubt this was the finest $1 spent on the trip and the only time that I have left a 400% tip.
Holy smokes....it is way past my bedtime.
Tomorrow we ride to Erie PA.
90 miles and we expect headwinds again.
Dream BIG, Jeff
I feel like I got off of a bad cruise!
